Reading Between the Lines!
Languages are one of the many important, fundamental necessities our universe has endowed us with- or have we endowed the universe with?!
Languages are primarily associated with human beings-us- because most of our life depends on them. And, I’m obviously not talking about verbal langauges. I’m talking about anything that communicates.
From this factor, comes the inclination to point that it is human nature to seek out a language in most things we do. Indeed, we, as individuals, all have our own personal languages with which we have exclusive access to.
What I find really interesting is to decipher these latent, hidden, inconspicuous languages. Having said that, however, most of the time I find myself deciphering, and getting immensely peeved by, the sub-languages of innuendo, codified dialogue, or conversation which has an apparent, literal meaning, but also has an ‘inner’ meaning, that may bear no connection with the apparent one!
It’s like being straightforward is now ‘rude’ or ‘arrogant’. Those who are wise and prefer to keep quiet, so as not cause uneccesary problems are called ’snobs’ or ‘condecending’. So, what should one do?
Some people use sub-languages to derive some sort of exclusivity, self-importance. After all, is it bad in wanting to look important in one own’s eyes, even if it is at the cost of subtley shoving others away from a blink-and-u-miss-it boundary line? Dunno abt u, but I sure think it is!
I mean, it is alright to resort to this when its for an important cause, like national security, or cracking a joke. But if you really want to feel important, do something more valuable. Talking straighforwardly would be a start- you’ll be surprised at how this is appreciated, even by people who use a double-meaning, dialect.
When you can expect someone to give you some honest advice, that u desparately need, why would you not do that to people who are in that position?
Why should we have to read between the lines all the time?
In fact, as I write this blog, I’m thinking whether I sound as if Im ‘preaching’ or not?!
I do not mean to offend anyone. Im merely trying to make a point, which has evolved from my observations and experiences with all sorts of people I meet.
I can tell you though, that all this ‘preaching’ and talking-in-double-meaning-nonsense, does give journos, like me, a challenge to overcome. How can one spread a message relevant to society, without sounding like a self-appointed, er, umm, preacher?
Come to think of it, I suppose it also challenges other communicative mediums, like films. Funny though, one can be more clear, even blunt, if you convey something via television. If a film or article reads in a complicatedway that fails to amuse the audience/reader, its bad. If they are too simple, it is also bad, because it could indicate that an audience/reader is something negative.
Putting it this way, may make you think that it is tough to please the public out there - and it sure can be!
However, this is also the exciting, interesting part. All this may sound okay, but you might be thinking ” Yes, but what about white lies?” What about them? If you are saying a white lie for a good reason, then there is nothing wrong in that-duh!
There is also the option of pointing out the bad bits too. If someone comes up to you wearing something painfully ridiculous, but couldn’t for his/her life spot it, what would you do or say?
The problem is everyone is so busy, so stressed, so tired, so lacking enough time, that one cannot really blame such people if they fancy having a laugh! We all know what would be best to do or say, but sometimes we just cannot be bothered to. We fail to often register that people around us can also be stressed, tired, busy, looking for a laugh. In such situations, if a little innuendo, a little white lie, can give us a laugh, so be it. Even though it’s not nice to confess this!
I mean, who would want to live a white lie?
As long we don’t blow it out of proportion-what do u think?
